Farmers have been hurriedly looking for alternative sources of income ever since the Trump administration canceled federal programs through the USDA that helped small and mid-sized producers provide food for schools, food banks, and childcare centers.

Canceling the $1 billion funding is illegal, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat and possible presidential candidate in 2028, contends. Shapiro is suing the Trump administration for the funding cuts.

“They made a deal with our farmers,” Shapiro said of the USDA’s agreements with farmers in his state. “They made a deal with Pennsylvania, and they illegally broke it.”

Shapiro questioned the administration’s intentions by purposely causing harm to America’s farmers and to people who depend on the food they produce. “I don’t get what the hell their priorities are if not feeding people and taking care of our farmers,” Shapiro said.
