Protect the Fruit

A bankrupt citrus grower has more than two dozen potential buyers, but the future of its fruit crop may be dependent on how quickly the legal process can move forward, according to the Fresno Bee.

Primar Wawona’s 13,000 acres sit in prime fruit farmland area (Fresno and Tulare counties) and produce peaches, plums, nectarines, and citrus. The current company was the result of a megamerger of Gerawan Farming and Wawona Packing, creating a grower powerhouse that produced more peaches, plums, and nectarines than anywhere else in the United States, according to the Fresno Bee.

The company filed for bankruptcy in October and laid off about 5,000 workers, which has potential buyers concerned that existing fruit trees won’t get properly prepared for the upcoming growing season.
